Utah Fans Pissed Over Michael Jordan Look Alike

December 8, 2009

Utah Flash owner Brandt Anderson’s idea of fun is much different than 7,500 of the teams fans.

Anderson lead the crowd to believe that Michael Jordan and Bryon Russell, the former Utah Jazz forward, were going to be playing a one-on-one game during halftime of an NBA Development League game.

It started back in September after certain remarks that MJ made about Russell during his Hall of Fame speech. Russell later challenged Jordan to a battle afterwards.   Andersen got in on it saying he would pay the winner of the challenge $100,000 for the charity of his choice.

And here’s where it starts to go bad…

Deadspin says the Flash hired a a Michael Jordan look-alike to walk around Provo on Monday, even going as far as uploading a YouTube video of ‘MJ’ surrounded by ‘bodyguards’ eating at a quiet local restaurant.

It worked, 7,500 fans thought they were going to see Michael Jordan in action…..and then boom…

During halftime the lights were turned off and Russell came out asking for Jordan. Then from the other side of the court a Jordan impersonator came out surrounded by bodyguards. A few moments later Russell announced it was an impersonator and then left the court while the fans booed loudly.

Fans were pissed so the first thing they though was lets give ‘em free swag!

The Flash employees tried to cheer the crowd up by throwing out free t-shirts, but the boos continued, and some people even threw the t-shirts back. Most left after halftime.

After the Flash ended up beating the Dakota Wizards by 10 points, Andersen took to his blog and wrote:

“This was done in fun.  If you did not see it as fun or you feel we went over the top I am sorry.”

Andersen is also offering tickets for a future Flash game for fans that had tickets from Monday night’s game.
