Tom Hanks Is Going To The Moon

According to Variety, Tom Hanks has been chosen to play an astronaut as the lead role in ‘Major Matt Mason,’ which is a live-action feature based on Mattel’s astronaut action figure developed in the 1960s.

Hanks will also co-produce while Universal Pictures will develop the film.

The popular toy line, featuring Mason leading an astronaut team that lived and worked on the moon, became popular in the buildup to the first manned moon mission, but was later retired in the 1970s.

This isn’t the first time Hanks has played an astronaut.  He played astronaut Jim Lovell in the movie ‘Apollo 13, where he commanded the Apollo 13 mission in 1970 that suffered an explosion while traveling to the Moon but was brought back safely to Earth by the efforts of the crew and mission control.
