Tom Cruise Not Returning For Top Gun Sequel

July 23, 2008

Earlier this week, speculation grew that Tom Cruise would appear in a new Top Gun movie sequel, 22 years after the original was first released with his character Maverick returning to Top Gun school as a flight instructor.

But now a representative from Paramount told Access Hollywood there was “no way” Cruise would be returning to the role.

A source tells The Sun: “The idea is Maverick is at the Top Gun school as an instructor - and this time it is he who has to deal with a cocky new female pilot.”

What do you think?  Will the movie be the same without the star?

    Ahh..Another gag worthy PC movie…

  2. DBCooper Says:

nobody will touch this guy because Hollywood hates Scientology. and rightly so.

  3. Crazy Canuck Says:

In my eyes, Tom Cruise is dead. I would not pay a nickel for anything he and his wackos are involved in. I don’t care how good a movie. If he’s in it, the movie doesn’t exist to me.

  4. jujo Says:

I’m just interested in whether the skin on Katie Holmes hands is getting darker

  5. Terpal Says:

He probably read the script and wanted nothing to do with a poorly written knockoff that was destined for failure. Tom Cruise may be nuts, but he’s not stupid.

  6. Joe Says:

Would rather see Val Kilmer back as Iceman.

Heck even a fat Val Kilmer would be better than Cruise

  7. Katie Says:

For once Im actually writting one of these.
Who cares what his stupid religion, if he can act who cares what he believes, if everyone went to see movies for that reason. no one would go to see movies…

I dont think they should make a sequel for the fact it was a great movie and it will just get f’d up with a sequel not because of peoples religions

  8. Matt Says:

Don’t call that a religion. Praying to the porcelain god is closer to a religion. This has Karate Kid IV written all over it.

  9. JimmyJones Says:

It’s not a religion, it’s a dangerous mind control cult.

  10. Mike Says:

And who are you to determine what religion is and what is not? Oh, just regular bigot… Take a shower!!! Sorry, bigotry is stinks.

  11. the man with the plan Says:

let’s see how Scientology compares to other religions :

    1. worships a space man with extra terrestrial powers

    EVERY RELIGION IN THE WORLD.
( I can see the Christians, Muslims and Jews screaming now “But my spaceman isn’t a spaceman - its GOD!)

    2. Believes in non physical inhabitants of your body that last after you are dead and secretly controls you somehow.

    EVERY RELIGION IN THE WORLD.
( I can see the Christians, Muslims and Jews screaming now “But my soul is real!)

    3. takes money from members promising help in return

    EVERY RELIGION IN THE WORLD.
( do I really need to comment this!)

conclusion - Every major religion is just as crazy as Scientology.

One thing cool about Scientology though is it’s comparison to Psychotherapy.
In traditional psychotherapy you go to a therapist and lie for 10 years about stuff while paying $50 to $1000/hr until maybe one day you say what really bothers you.

In Scientology you go to a person and talk to them like a therapist about what’s bothering you but you are hooked up to an “E -meter” which like a lie detector can see how much you sweat if you are avoiding the truth so you get the stuff that’s bothering you off your mind right away instead of in 10 yrs.

Furthermore you can do it for free with someone right on the side of Hollywood Boulevard and visit Ripley’s Believe or Not Museum after you are “clear”.

    Advantage: Scientology!

[…] There will be no Top Gun sequel - Daily Stab […]

  13. MattC Says:

The reason this idiotic movie will be destined for failure is the enormously asinine premise…”top gun” female pilot blah blah.

The social engineering involved in this lame story is over the top even by hollywood standards.

  14. Chaos Motor Says:

man with the plan, your analysis has a major flaw: while every other religion is willing to accept your donations, none that I am aware except the CULT of Scientology INSIST and REQUIRE that you pay pre-set amounts just to discover what it is you are supposed to believe in. It costs $385,000 on average just to learn about Thetans, from my understanding. ANY REAL RELIGION will tell you ALL of their beliefs if you are merely willing to listen. Scamentology requires you to pay out the nose before you ever discover ANYTHING about it.

And more to the point, Top Gun sucked ass and the sequel will be even worse. And Tom Cruise is insane, I will never pay to see another movie with him in it.

    Chaos Mot5or.

Of course what I was saying was tongue in cheek and not meant to be a defense of Scientology whose practices I know little about except what I see on Hollywood Blvd and the old E meter operators clearing manual I found in an old bookstore and read.

But what you say about them being the only ones who force you to pay first to get your knowledge or salvation- sorry but that’s complete hogwash. Every Church does it. The ones that don’t are in deep financial trouble.

Just this morning I heard on a on a televised crusade with Benny Hinn a guy “preacher” standing up and saying god would give “triple favor” to anyone who pulled old their credit card and gave a “seed” of $1000 . No joke.
He went on to say that they would be a millionaire or some such similar thing and that he had come out of a terrible spot in his own life when he answered someone else call to receive “triple favor” and had himself then pulled out his own credit card to charge $1000.

this whole thing of “give us money first and you will receive” is hardly the most represented by Scientology. I don’t know what they do . They may do that.
but I see it on these televangelist shows almost everyday now and millions of people watch those things and give money.
Now you and I can sit back and say “of course those are ridiculous” but the largest “churches” in the nation are being supported and grown by just those tactics so can we really say that Scientology is even coming close to what the televised”preachers” are doing?

All I am saying is the mainstream religions are and always have been as ridiculous or worse than the claims about Scientology are now. Ted turner who started out in atlanta with channel 17 did a deal with PAt Robertson he said where he broadcast PAt Robertson’s show and literally Pat Robertson would come to his office every day and split the money because that was the deal. Ted turner said that. You may think Robertson is a known swindler or not but the guy led the movement that took over the Republican party in 1980 and helped get Reagan elected (nearly became the nominee himself) and helped get Bush elected from that influx of “evangelicals” into the republican party so it isn’t really fringe at all.

But with Scientology you can get your free emeter reading and then go visit the Ripley’s Beleive it or not museum just down the block.

(and also I must admit there is a certain logic to having someone ask you what is bugging you while you are tied to a lie detector. Sure saves a lot of trouble and time and perhaps psychotherapist’s fees because they can see right through your S%$^. Hell get the guy to admit he is gay on the first session rather than fumble around in a shrinks office for years paying thousands in fees. That’s what I say!

    So I say again:
    Advantage: Scientology!
    (tongue still firmly in cheek)
    :-)

  16. Jay Bud Says:

This had to have started because of the cat out of the bag about the new TV Show “American Top Gun” which uses the real Navy pilots that flew the F-14s,F-5s and A-4s for the movie. They already have the game and backing of Microsoft with filming due to start in fall/winter 2008-09.The legendary F-14 Tomcat pilot and former commander of the Navys Top Gun school Capt Dale “Snort” Snodgrass nexus for the show.

  17. Me Says:

It doesn’t matter who is in this movie. It just won’t be any good. I’m sure all of the flying scenes will be CGI at that alone is enough to ruin it.

  18. pcscripter Says:

Here’s what would bring in pleny of greenbacks. Tom Cruise returns as top gun instructor and Aston Kuscher plays the son of Goose. He watches his back and helps fight some conflict in the middle east or asia. Somebody should write the script but you read it first here.
