Superman Star Brandon Routh Dropped From Sequel
January 4, 2008

The Superman Returns sequel appears to be going a whole new route. As if it wasn’t already bad enough that “Superman Returns” writers Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris have opted not to come back for the next movie which is already titled Superman: Man of Steel, but now it is being reported that ‘Superman’ himself Brandon Routh and director Bryan Singer have both been dropped from the new film.
A younger Superman will appear in “Superman: Man Of Steel” - effectively replacing 28-year-old Routh as the story focuses on the superhero’s relationship with fellow DC Comics characters The Justice League.
Moviemaker Bryan Singer is “too busy” working on other projects to commit to the sixth movie in the superhero franchise, reports Variety. It is hoped shooting on “Superman: Man Of Steel” will begin after the Hollywood writers strike is resolved for a 2009 release.
UPDATE: Since posting this last night, my other sources to this story have been updated with info stating that Warner Brothers has confirmed Brandon Routh will indeed be in the new movie.

You make this sound like this is BAD news. Maybe–almost certainly–Routh could’ve done a lot better with a halfway decent script and better, less heavy-handed direction, not to mention a better costume), but the loss of the writers and directors can only signal good things for this franchise. Maybe people will be able to enjoy a Superman movie again instead of having to suffer through one.

“Apparently the recent blog by Anne Thompson in Variety has started a smattering of rumors that actor Brandon Routh would not be returning to the role of Superman in the ‘Man of Steel’ movie.
Thompson does state that Routh would not be the next Superman fans see on-screen, but she was clearly referring to the fact that the ‘Justice League’ movie would fill the role with a different actor. “

I’ve not heard this from anywhere else, I wonder if this is being confused with the fact that a younger person is going to play Superman (and Batman) in the new Justice League Movie that has been greenlit. I highly doubt the next superman movie will deal with the Justice League, since their movie is already going ahead.

superman returns sucked anyway. i think getting rid or routh and singer is a swell idea.

[…] Superman star Brandon Routh dropped from sequel - I didn’t have a problem with him at all, and he’s only 28. How young do they plan on going? I like the idea of bringing The Justice League in, but if they use Batman, which they should, then it better be Christian Bale. […]
