Selena Gomez Thinks Child Stars Have Become Easy Targets

Growing up in the spotlight isn't easy and Selena explains that she thinks those struggling to find their way have become media targets who are regularly picked on.

S elena, who has been in the spotlight for most of her life, explains that child stars should be given more freedom to figure themselves out as people and learn from their mistakes, instead of instantly being judged so harshly. She believes the pressure just makes everything worse:

“We’re easy targets. Every single kid who was brought up like this is an easy target. It’s disgusting, because it’s interesting to grown adults that these kids go through weird things because they’re figuring out, ‘Do I like this? Do I love this? Maybe I love this person. Oh, I’m exposed to this, people are reporting my every move and this and that because of Instagram and Twitter and you can find out everything.’ There’s a difference between being a fan––there’s a difference between that and what you have to do… Because it’s, I don’t know, fun, maybe? It’s like watching a car crash as you’re driving past it. You want to watch it.”

Selena, who worked with Disney and appeared on ‘Barney & Friends’ from a young age, says she childhood was quite abnormal because she was never given much breathing room and there were always people around her influencing her decisions:

“I didn’t have an opportunity to figure out my life without people having an opinion every step of the way… [but] I chose this. So I’m not gonna sit here and say, ‘Oh, my God, poor me, I didn’t have a normal childhood.’ I don’t give a f–k about that.”

She adds that she wouldn’t fast forward through the difficult period she’s had in her life (including a stint in rehab where she battled Lupus) because things are slowly becoming easier:

“No, because I’m not that stupid. And I get it. I just have to be patient. It’s slowly dissolving the older I get. And I just have to be patient and make great things with quality, from producing to singing to acting. And one by one, I will be able to change the dialogue and people won’t care about everything that’s happened to me.”
