Sean Avery Suspended For Inappropriate Comment
December 2, 2008

The NHL has suspended Dallas Stars Sean Avery indefinitely for comments he made Tuesday morning after a practice in Calgary.
Here’s the scoop, The Stars were playing the Flames Tuesday night. Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf is dating Elisha Cuthbert, who is Avery’s ex-girlfriend. The comment was:
“I’m really happy to be back in Calgary; I love Canada. I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don’t know what that’s about, but enjoy the game tonight”
See the above video….
The AP report on the suspension considered the words too crude to repeat, describing it instead as a “crass term to refer to ex-girlfriends now dating other people.”
The league said Avery will have to meet with Commissioner Gary Bettman, who will determine any additional penalty. A hearing has not been scheduled. The league said the suspension was made in accordance with the provisions of NHL By-Law 17 and Article 6 of the NHL Constitution for conduct “detrimental to the league or game of hockey.”
Stars owner Thomas O. Hicks released a statement saying:
“I completely support the league’s decision to suspend Sean Avery.
“Had the league not have suspended him, the Dallas Stars would have. This organization will not tolerate such behavior, especially from a member of our hockey team. We hold our team to a higher standard and will continue to do so.”
Avery signed a four-year, $15.5 million deal with the Stars last summer. He played for the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and Detroit Red Wings before that.
