Survivor winner Richard Hatch was arrested by police in Newport, Rhode Island on Tuesday, just hours after an exclusive interview on The TODAY Show.

During the interview (see the video above) Hatch insisted he spent close to four years behind bars for income tax evasion because he is gay.

For the past several months Hatch has been living under house arrest, which he was scheduled for release on October 7.  He has continued to claim the executive producers of Survivor told him they would pay the taxes on the $1 million he took home for winning Survivor in 1999.

Hatch is currently being held at the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office in Bourne, Mass., although authorities will not disclose the reason for his arrest this morning.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Roy Lyons told MSNBC Wednesday:

“We just don’t have the same kind of details on the federal inmates we book as we do with the regular city and county inmates.  It’s got to be that he violated some kind of condition. There’s no other reason this would have happened.”
