Frontman Anthony Kiedis has confirmed the group has disbanded after the recording of their last album Stadium Arcadium and the tour that followed became a “gruelling, long haul”.

He tells Rolling Stone magazine,

“We didn’t really stop until the tour ended last year. We were all emotionally and mentally zapped at the end of that run.”

“Cooler heads prevailed and the discussion at the end of our last tour was, ‘Let’s not do anything Red Hot Chili Peppers related for a minimum of one year, and just live and breathe and eat and learn new things.’”

And the break came at the perfect time for the band:

“I was about to have a brand new son. Flea is very inspired to re-up his musical direction and ability and skill and he wants to learn new stuff. John (Frusciante) has been firing away on his own, making different solo projects.

“And Chad (Smith) joined a jazz band and went to Japan. I’m just home, hanging out with this really cool little kid, learning how to surf.”

So…they didn’t split up, rather they’re just taking a one year break?

Doesn’t matter, Californication was their last good album anyway.

Everybody calm the crap down. they always take a break , nothing serious. Did you ever notice how long a gap there is between californication and by the way and stadium arcadium???? nothing out of the usual, just a bunch of fags who dont keep up with them are over reacting

  12. Raleigh Says:

Dude, calm down, they’re just taking a one year hiatus, not breaking up. Oh and for the writer, learn how to report the whole story, not just bits and pieces.

  13. John Says:

disbanded for one year does NOT equal being split/broken up, that sounds so final. they need to refresh themselves after like 10 years of always being together (read the actual article). dont overreact. and again, READ the whole article, it makes more sense. anthony talks about tiny ideas for new music he has and future business for the rhcp. call that broken up?

  14. Joey From Jersey Says:

“We’re disbanded for the moment. We actually took a very long time to make the Stadium Arcadium record, because we wrote a lot of songs and then got way too married to them and decided we need it to be a double album. Which was a great experience, but it took forever. It was really a grueling, long haul and it followed two other very long hauls, Californication and By the Way. So we kind of started in 1999 with the writing and the recording of Californication and we didn’t really stop until the tour ended last year. We were all emotionally and mentally zapped at the end of that run. Cooler heads prevailed and the discussion at the end of our last tour was, “Let’s not do anything Red Hot Chili Peppers-related for a minimum of one year, and just live and breathe and eat and learn new things.” I was about to have a brand new son. Flea is very inspired to re-up his musical direction and ability and skill and he wants to learn new stuff. John [Frusciante] has been firing away on his own, making different solo projects. And Chad [Smith] joined a jazz band and went to Japan. I’m just home, hanging out with this really cool little kid, learning how to surf. But I’m starting to get just a little bit of a tingle that it would be nice to start thinking about songs and pieces of music. But just pieces.”
