Nicolas Cage Ready To Quit Acting
February 1, 2008
Academy Award winning actor Nicolas Cage is threatening to quit the movie industry because he is ‘tired of it’ and admits he has lost his passion for acting and complains his career has forced him to become antisocial.
“Some movie stars look like they are having a ball, but I’m tired of it. It has made me reclusive. That is an increasingly gnawing feeling in my body. When I first started I loved it. One of my frustrations is I have no control. I haven’t worked in a while, and it will be eight months before I start my next picture. I know for the first time which direction I’m going in and what changes I want to make.”
44 year old Cage also fears his fans are tired of watching him on the big screen. He adds,:
“For some reason, I piss off the audience. People who like one type of film don’t like to see me in another. Things I did and said early on still haunt me. I started acting at 17, but I’m 44 now and have grown up. I wonder if I am still interesting to watch if I didn’t drink or raise hell, but it’s obnoxious to keep drinking.”
Well, I don’t think he’s all that serious about quitting. He has all kinds of movies lined up for this year and next:
- Electric God (2009) announced
- The Dance (2008) announced ‘Billy ‘The Kid’ Roth’
- Amarillo Slim (2008) pre-production
- Knowing (2008) pre-production
- G-Force (2009) filming-voice
- Bangkok Dangerous (2008) completed

Big loss.

I would hate to see him stop acting. He’s my favorite actor because of the perspective he brings to his characters. I can see how he’d want to leave behind the stereotype character that brought him into public focus. But I also have liked the more recent roles, those which are thought provoking. Please Nick, don’t leave us with the mediocrity hollywood would leads us to believe is acceptable film.

The reason why he “pisses off the audience” as he said is that he’s lost his touch. Every movie he’s in he’s Nicholas Cage, not the character he’s playing, but Nick Cage. It’s the same thing with Jack Nicholson. Their heads get too big and they think people want to see THEM, when really we want to see them play an interesting or cool character, but they think that they ARE the interesting and cool characters and all they need to do is say the lines as themselves. Bottpm line is, he’s no longer an actor, but a movie star: He’s Nick Cage. Nicholas Cage, Jack Nicholsson, Tom Cruise, Sean Connery, Harrison Ford…all of them are movie stars now, not actors. You see them in a movie and they just play the same part over and over again.
February 3rd, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Nick Cage has to be the most typecast actor ever to have spilled onto the big screen. I can’t see this as being a loss. If in fact he did say that people may be tired of watching him, I would confirm that. The only movie I can remember any sort of original performance by Mr. Cage is “Adaptation”. If he were able to consistently produce performances of that caliber I would miss him, but he has never showcased that. I for one would not miss Mr. Cage on screen and if he would prefer to leave this behind than more power to him, I’m certain that he will be happy with whatever decision he makes.
February 3rd, 2008 at 5:19 pm
i don’t know he was acting in the first place
February 3rd, 2008 at 5:30 pm
I always like Nicholas Cage regardless of his role. Adaptation and 8mm were some of my favorites. Maybe he just needs a break for a few years.

he was great in the early years (raising arizona) but the last 10 years all he’s done is crap.

Absolutely the best news I have heard in the past six months! (Six months ago, I received an acceptance letter from the college I was hoping to attend. Otherwise, I’d say the best of my life).
February 3rd, 2008 at 6:53 pm
Why doesn’t he just stop ding really shitty movies? I don’t think he EVER turns down a script. He just makes whatever CRAP he is presented and every once in a while he lucks out and finds a good movie. Can you imagine the man in “Leaving Las Vegas” is the same douche in “National Treasure”?
February 3rd, 2008 at 6:57 pm
He’s become the Mulder of Stardom. He did indeed become typecast, but I think it’s more because he lost touch with what it was like to be a common man.
Like Duchovny, he played the same guy for so long it became for him and the audience.. what would it be like for him to not be chasing Aliens?
Duchovny did some of his best work, unannounced. I think that was good for him and the audience. (One) because he wasn’t playing to his fan club, and hence no expectations (Two) because he really could play outide the box.
Cage could easily do the same. He should do some cameos, pursue some other aspects of his career for a while.. absence or mystery plays cool.

I am glad this swollen balded headed ego maniac (typical Hollywood star) finally realizes he is full of shit. May be take Jona Travolta and the other girls join him and finally leave. Why is it that the old Hollywood stars all had class and we admired them. Actors now a days are like spoiled children that need to be smacked or sued into doing what they are suppose to do.
February 3rd, 2008 at 7:36 pm
I speak for myself, and every Ghost Rider comic book fan in the world, by saying we only wish you had quit a few years ago Nick. I don’t think anyone could have been more right than L (#3 above) about why you have become an over paid 3rd rate actor. The change started in the late ’90s and has gotten progressively worse.
February 3rd, 2008 at 7:49 pm
I wrote him his first fan letter, probably 30 years ago. I was amazed that he called me, from the location of Rumblefish. Our conversation lasted maybe a minute. I’d tell him now what I told him then: Do the best scripts. He’s still got some great comedy chops he hasn’t used yet. He doesn’t need the movie star stuff anymore. He’s done enough to keep a Nicholas Cage Film Festival busy for weeks. I agree he ought to do some supporting roles, if the scripts are right. I’m fairly amazed he decided to be a movie star. He was always an actor to me. Love acting in yourself, not yourself in acting, Mr. Cage. And skip getting bummed out. Write your memoir if you need it stroked.
February 3rd, 2008 at 8:23 pm
He just needs to do a movie without it being tied to Las Vegas somehow. Things’ll turn around.
February 3rd, 2008 at 8:31 pm
I truly enjoy Cage in pretty much everything he has done. He can stretch himself, if he wants. he needs to get to the point where doesn’t need the money, and then a sense of control will enter his life.
February 3rd, 2008 at 8:33 pm
He’s entertaining.
You can’t watch ConAir and tell me that you aren’t having a good time. You can’t watch National Treasure and tell me that it’s not a cool adventure.
He just makes light hearted entertaining films that aren’t supposed to be taken too seriously.
Remember Face Off? That was off the hook!
February 3rd, 2008 at 8:39 pm
He was in Birdie. It was good. After that, the NY/Hollywood creeps used him and he went along with it.
Why doesn’t he find a movie producer from Spain or Italy, somebody who can make a real movie without all the mind-control bad karma from the US?
February 3rd, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Well Mr Cage if you have an ego i would think that after reading this lot you would be happy to head into the sunset by now, so on your bike as we say over here.
Really did you actually expect the world to come to a great thundering halt because you have become bored?
If I got bored with being pay the insane amount of money you actors got paid good God! I mean really give me a break.
Get a life and use your money to help people that need helping and stop looking for an ego boost from the “little people” ;o) Sorry luv but its just such a sad way to lol

Be brave enough to change.
I like you man and what you do. But if you really don’t enjoy it anymore, be brave enough to try other things. Get the blood flowing again.
February 3rd, 2008 at 9:35 pm
I’ve enjoyed all of Cage’s Movies from the first time I saw him in Vampire’s Kiss, back in the 80’s. The National Treasure movies are excellent, and Gone in 60 Seconds is one of my all time favorites. If you’re reading this Nicolas, Please don’t quit… I have really enjoyed the characters you play. If you need a break, take one, but know that your fans are out here and we DO enjoy your work.
February 3rd, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Good, no one cares since Cage stopped being any worth anything in the late 90s. Between ‘Ghost Rider’ and ‘Next’, I think its safe to say that him acting or not acting really doesn’t mean too much anymore. At this point he is little more than ‘Nick Cage(tm)’, a cheap trinket that moves tickets.
Cage: I’m pretty sure you’re already rich, so how about you do what most actors of your caliber do which is do one shitty blockbuster every so many years and spend the rest of the time on, you know, scripts that don’t completely suck.

Good riddance..learn to pick a good script. WTF was that flaming skull bs? And this disney national treasure crap? LATER
February 4th, 2008 at 12:41 am
I think that it is very reasonable and healthy for him to want
to occupy himself with other things, REAL things that would
require him to be who he REALLY IS. A person must live a
real life. I think it would be good for him to explore really
being a writer or a weather man or an arms dealer or an ENT.
I don’t think anyone can stay interested in pretending to be
other people all of the time forever.

It was all downhill after “Raising Arizona”….RIP Nick Cage, you will be missed.
February 4th, 2008 at 12:52 am
If he quits that will be a shame, interestingly I started collecting every movie he had been in a few months back almost spooky he announces this
February 4th, 2008 at 3:49 am
I would love to see him quit. His single, slack-jawed, open-mouthed, retardedly hollow stare is in too many fucking movies all ready. The man always looks like he’s about to start drooling. If he quits movies completely, I might actually celebrate that with a cold one.
Cheers!

Wow, I guess opinions really are like assholes. I can’t think of anything more pathetic than actually having an opinion on a movie star. Ok, I can. Thinking that your opinion is right. Some people like nick cage, others don’t. Obviously. The man sells heaps of movie tickets. Oh, and Snake Eyes FTW!
February 4th, 2008 at 8:50 am
The only reason I would be sad if Nick Cage quit acting was that I would be unable to make fun of him anymore.
Stuttering and showing absolutely no emotion; the man has made a career of it.

i liked lord of war, and matchstick men, i thought he was pretty good in both. i mean, he clearly wasn’t Nick Cage ™ in the latter, right?

Funny. I could have sworn Cage was tired of acting and not really that into it ever since finishing “Raising Arizona.” Notice that he is one of those actors who can play only one character style in almost every single film. What’s the trouble with this? People that hate your core character will never watch your movies and… well it would suggest that you are not that good of an actor.
February 6th, 2008 at 11:12 am
I think he’s a very good actor! Out of all of the films I’ve seen him in I can’t really remember any of them as bad movies. If he sucked as an actor he wouldn’t be pared with so many excellent co-stars. And he still seems to be a major box office draw. Tom Hulce dropped out of site for quite a while too and I think he’s been missed. I hope Nicolas will hang in there and keep up the quality work…

I love him so very much and I’d hate to see him leave acting. But if he lost the passion, then why keep doing something he doesn’t enjoy anymore. i feel for him, but when you lose passion, you lose everything. I support whatever he does. He’s a great actor and i will never forget him and all the wonderful movies he’s played in. I’m sure whatever he chooses to do next will be just as amazing because he really is amazing.

Nicolas Cage is a very good actor my favorite. He is my role model and
i like him for that. I want to become an actor to so i don’t see whats
the fuss. If he feels to quit well it is his choice. I will always re-
member the confidence, hope, pride he has left me with. I love him.

Nicholas Cage has his unique style of acting. He did accomplish what
he set out to as an actor. When you hear there is a Nicholas Cage film
coming soon it makes u turn your head to look. He still captures
attention. He’s just a private person I think. I think its time
someone takes care of him now and loves him and gives him attention.
Nick Cage is a one of a kind person and that is darn great. He works
hard and puts alot into his acting career. You can see it in his
acting. He is a LEAD man. He really needs a good woman to stand by him
and make him feel like he is #1 always. Nick is a legend already. I
don’t want to see him retire from acting yet. The film industry is
loosing too many legends. All these new actors now are in a different
world. They will never be able to do what these past legends have
done. Good Luck Mr. Cage!

Think about FACE OFF … how well they played eachother. Nic is awesome in every role. He’s different every time and can adjust and become a character.
HOT!

From a Marvel charcter to a Las Vegas drunk…come on!
From things that can never happen to you, to things that are real.
It’s fun to see what he is doing next.
May 6th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
Nic…think back to when you started and changed your name.
You had a real passion to make it and you did. Sometimes you misplace your passion. You will get it back.

October 19th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
I dont give a damn if he quits or not. Honestly he sucks as an actor anyway. I seen better acting in the chimp cage at the zoo…..
October 19th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
Oh by the way…maybe he was the reason the last series of movies he was in flopped…ghost rider was ok but i think his acting ruined it.
October 19th, 2009 at 11:34 pm
If he wasn’t so good at what he does- he wouldn’t “still” be such a hot star. I could give two craps in a wheat field if you all think that a retirement is in order because I will be on reruns of all of his bad azz movies and I will keep watching any that he comes out in in the future. I’m only in my twenties and there is a new generation of admirers. ROCK on Nicholas. Do what makes you happy- but in the mean time I’m going to grab my popcorn and watch The Rock for the 8th time..
