Madonna and Lourdes Malawi

Madonna showed up at the court house in Malawi on Monday, but now she will have to wait to find out if she can adopt a second child.

A court official told the Associated Press that her adoption application has been adjourned until Friday.

The Material Girl is looking to adopt Mercy James, a 4-year-old girl from the South African country, whose single teenage mother died at age 18.

In other Madonna news,  her and daughter Lourdes, 12, visited a Chinkhota village where she has purchased a large tract of land to construct a girls’ school.  Sources say the new school is modeled on the Leadership Academy for Girls that Oprah Winfrey built in South Africa.

Although this doesn’t come without controversy as locals fears that they would lose their ancestral lands and crop fields.

Local mother of four, Esinati Nkhoma said:

“We are told to leave our gardens after this year’s harvest; we are told our houses are to be pulled down – but nobody is talking about compensation.  Where will we move to?”

A senior government official has said that issues of compensation for the land are being handled by Raising Malawi which is a charity established by Madonna.

A journalist asked Madonna whether she was worried about the land concerns, and she shouted back, “No!”

Later, Madonna and Lourdes were heard speaking to villagers in Chichewa asking “Muli bwanji?,” which translates to “How are you?”
