Kelly Layne Lau, 30, and Michael Schumacher, 34, husband and wife, were arrested on Monday and charged with torture and other counts after a bruised, terrified 17-year-old showed up at a gym with a chain locked to his ankle, claiming he had just fled his captors, authorities said Tuesday.
The two had been taken into custody for questioning earlier in the day at their home in Tracy, where the emaciated boy was allegedly held against his will. A search of the home turned up evidence implicating the couple, Robinson said. Tracy is about 60 miles east of San Francisco.
They were charged with torture, kidnapping and child abuse, and were set to appear in court Thursday, officials said. Bail was set at $1.2 million for Michael Schumacher but his wife’s bail had not been set, authorities said.
Police said they were searching for a third suspect but wouldn’t give details.
The boy turned up half-naked Monday at the In-Shape Sports Club, near the couple’s home. It’s not clear how he ended up in Tracy; authorities said he ran away last year from a foster home in Sacramento, about 70 miles to the north.
Robinson said the boy was confused when approached by detectives Monday, unsure where he had come from and how long had been held against his will. He was taken to a hospital.
“The wounds he had and his physical condition as well as having a chain around his leg corroborated his basic statement that he was being held against his will.”
Chuck Ellis, a manager of the In-Shape Sports Club, said the boy came into the fitness center Monday afternoon wearing only boxer briefs, covered with what appeared to be soot. Ellis says the teen was scared someone was going to come after him and asked to be hidden.
“He said `Don’t let them get me, don’t let them get me.’
”He was totally terrified.”
Ellis said the teenager told him he was picked up after running away from the foster home to look for his family and that he had been held for almost a year. Ellis said he looked like he was only 10 to 12 years old.
Robinson said detectives plan to interview the boy more Tuesday when he is a “little healthier.”

This poor kid was 17 but think how much of a hell his childhood
and life was. and just think…. somewhere out there RIGHT NOW
as i type this there are innocent small children and babies
being abused and tortured. It brings tears to my eyes. i would go
through cancer and chemo again for the chance to save just one of them!
And of course the pleasure of returning the favor to the abusers!
Come on!!! there has to be some bored wealthy individual out there
to fund some secret ops and get at least some of these people!

obviously in “the system” for another year or two and will probably
get all the counseling and medical attention he needs now but that
will all stop the day he turns 18–he could sue but what exactly
would he be able to get out of low life bottom feeders like this?
He would never see a penny. While I agree 100% that someone needs
to “deal” with these sick people, the money would probably be better
spent helping this boy recover from the horrors he has been through
and get on his feet on his own so he doen’t have to be put in another
home like this.

Hopefully, these two white pieces of trash get shot, raped with a broomstick, and from the looks of it, be forced to shower. When you start talking about white hicks and white trashy people, these two crudbuckets take the cake. Now, if we can just find a way to brutally decapitate these people, you know, chop a leg off, chop an arm off and then just let them lay there in pain, pleading for their disgusting life. This is one person who truly hopes these two hicks get beaten, raped, murdered, spit on, crapped on, urinated on, etc. I’m just hopeful, I pray these two people live in pain and die a long terrible death.

Can we tie these two people to a back of a truck and go about 100 mph with their heads bouncing off the concrete? Can we all take turns swinging a bat and hitting these two truly ugly people in the head with an aluminium bat? And then when they start pleading for help, can we swing faster and harder? Hopefully, we can cave their brains in to the point they just die on the spot. That would be great, that would be awesome. Would love nothing more than to take my 2 attack style German Sheps and let them have their way with these 2 hicks. My dogs would love to gnaw on their necks and faces, bite them till they can’t be bitten anymore. And then, my dogs will really go to work on them. Or how about this, just tie the mothers arm to one truck, her other arm to another truck, and then have both trucks speed away, rippin her apart into pieces, and then we can all stand over her and just laugh and laugh, spit on her, urinate on her, etc. She deserves it. My dogs would love to bite these people, eat them, kill them, rip them apart. I’m just hopefully these 2 white trashy people get raped, spit on, beaten, heads cut open, etc. Only good thoughts for the truly very ugly mom and dad that hurt this boy. Anthony, I understand your anger but an eye for an eye is no way forward.Death isnt a purnishment afterall man knows nothing of what happens after mortal life. Fair trial where they will definately be found guilty is best- life without parole for the three is the ultimate purnishment

we need due process. if we dont use it, we will end up with a king again. then we will have to have another
revolution and etc etc etc.
this kid deserves damages from the broken foster system in that state. clearly the state system was
negligent. I read somewhere else that he ran away to look for his parents. Now. if he was taken from his
parents for anything less than violence, the social workers should be put in prison too.
