Kelis Dumped From Jive After Her Milkshake Failed To Bring The Boys To The Yard
October 29, 2007
Kelis released just one album on Jive records, in 2006, having previously been signed to Virgin and Arista. Her manager Jeff Rabhan says, “It was a case of being in the ever-shrinking world of the record industry and finding herself on a label she wasn’t signed to and without a champion. She’s a different kind of artist - very image and style-driven. It’s either something you get or you don’t.”
Kelis’ 2003 album, “Tasty,” was certified gold, largely due to the hit “Milkshake.” (and a lot of luck) But her latest effort, Kelis Was Here, didn’t fare so well in the U.S., even with big guest spots including her respected husband, Nas. Though the disc debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard Charts, it barely sold 150,000 copies according to SoundScan.
Kelis is now hoping to branch out into acting, however Rabhan adds, “We’re not opposed to another major label deal, but it would have to be non-traditional.”
Yeah good luck!

And another point of evidence that the record industry is operating on a dying business model.
Future: ad supported music / artist driven distribution deals

Well, I hope this is the beginning of the end of the r&B/soul/hiphop/dance travesty that is the current mainstream record industry…. and they wonder why they are dying. Try some digital distribution and some other fucking genres.

Wow. We’re in a sad state of affairs here. The above poster hit the nail on the head — the top 40 is the LAST place to look for quality these days. Too much modern-day Payola crap.
We’ve got to take control of the medium and “digg up” artists with actual talent. For example, http://www.indieTitan.com is a start for true recognition of quality, not cookie-cutter crap.

Is her manager retarded? I ask this in all serisouness after reading:
*pounds head into desk* How is that different!?
Oh ok, maybe she’ll “branch out” and take her unique style and image driven qualities there… cause you know, they have a real shortage of that in Hollywood.

Her album was pretty great. Too bad I downloaded it. Maybe I should have bought it instead.
