Jack Nicholson Is ‘Furious’ He Wasn’t Asked To Play The Joker
November 8, 2007

In a recent MTV interview with Jack Nicholson, who starred as the Joker in the 1989 film ‘Batman admits he’s ‘furious’ he wasn’t asked to play the Joker in ‘The Dark Knight’
MTV: What do you think of another actor, Heath Ledger, playing the Joker in next summer’s “The Dark Knight”?
Nicholson: Let me be the way I’m not in interviews. I’m furious. I’m furious. [He laughs.] They never asked me about a sequel with the Joker. I know how to do that! Nobody ever asked me.
MTV: It was never brought up?
Nicholson: No. It’s like, in any area, you can’t believe the reasons things do or don’t happen. Not asking me how to do the sequel is that kind of thing. Maybe it’s not a mistake. Maybe it was the right thing, but to be candid, I’m furious.
MTV: I’m surprised to hear you sounding competitive about a role like that.
Nicholson: Well, the Joker comes from my childhood. That’s how I got involved with it in the first place. It’s a part I always thought I should play.
MTV: Will you see the new film?
Nicholson: I’m not inclined to watch it because of what I said. But if it’s a good movie, I’ll catch up with it somewhere. I don’t think they ever really captured Tim Burton’s spirit [since he stopped being involved]. They kind of drove the franchise into the ground. Tim Burton’s a genius. He had the right take on it. That’s why I did the movie. I did the movie based on a single conversation with him. We both come from the cartoon world originally. We had similar ideas. Tim said [the Joker] should have a humorous dark side to him. [Burton is] one of the great moviemakers. I think the world of him. He’s the most unassuming man. And he doesn’t feel pressure. That’s what I love about him. Once he’s in there, he’s smiling making the movie. That’s it!

Um, I think Jack is misinformed. It’s not a sequel to his movie. It’s starting over. If someone told him that he might calm down.

I think he was being tongue in cheek when he said he was furious

Thank god. Nicolson and Prince hammed up the first Batman as much as the 60’s television series.

The original batman was the best, I agree with Mr. Nicholson 100%. After it stopped being dark, it started being corny. Jack Nicholson FTW!

This makes me laugh… Women are ’sent upstairs’ and a newer younger model brought in all the time and no one thinks a thing about it, but these narcissistic men don’t think they could ever be ‘too old’ for a role.
He is too old, and he is not graceful about it either, like actors of generations before him. I lost respect for him reading this.
For Pete’s sake, he was the Joker in 1989! Hello. Shades of Rip Van Winkle here. He needs to wake up and smell the coffee. It is time to let one of the younger generation embody the character. He certainly didn’t protest when others were moved aside for him. His attitude is nasty and disgusting.
I’m sure Heath Ledger will do a fantastic job.

Nicholson’s portrayal of the Joker is not nearly dark enough for the these new Batman movies……which I like way better than the originals I might add.

[…] I have to say that undoubtedly Jack Nicholson would have cost money, but there’s really no one who can do the Joker quite like him, Nicholson is as close to the embodiment of the Joker as you can get, while Heath Ledger’s Joker looks more like a movie slasher out of something directed by Rob Zombie than the stylish and evilly funny Joker of Batman. Yeah. I dont think heath will be good for the role tbh. Not his style, to date. Time will tell.
Also, Hellelelenelnelna, actors are by and large fairly arrogant; You kinda have to be to put yourself forward in the public eye. I’m sure your loss of respect for him will have him crying at nights though, really :-o.

Just saw the movie. If Jack had of been in it, it might have actually been a good movie. Heath did a great acting job, but it couldn’t save the lowsy script.

Saw the Dark Knight last night. It was an alright film…just another person’s view of what they think the Joker should be. I was paying money to see a Batman film though. I totally loved Batman Begins so I do know this is supposed to be a new spin. However, he is the CLOWN PRINCE OF CRIME…not Hannibal Lecter’s stepson. He’s also Bob Kane’s creation not Heath Ledger’s. Jack Nicholson should have at least have had a cameo and so should have Michael Keaton. They brought in the nerd from 16 Candles over them? lol
