Heath Ledger’s The Dark Knight Billboard In NY
July 7, 2008

There’s no denying that The Dark Knight is one of the most anticipated movies of the year. The big premiere is finally here next week and it hits theaters July 18.
Here’s some pics of Heath Ledger as The Joker appearing on a billboard on Houston Street in New York promoting the upcoming film .
The massive billboard is two blocks from his apartment where he died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs back in January.
There’s also been a lot of hype surrounding news of Heath Ledger possibly winning an Oscar for his role as The Joker.
His co-stars Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Gary Oldman all predict he will win over critics with his performance at next year’s Academy Awards - which will be held in January 2009, just over a year after his tragic death.
Bale, who stars as Batman in the forthcoming movie, says:
“A lot of people talk about awards all the time, and it’s early days. But if anybody deserves it, of course, it is Heath in this.
“I do think that Heath has created an iconic villain that will stand for the ages, and of course, I would love to see him get an award. But you know, to me, you can witness his talent, celebrate his talent within this movie. Anything else is gravy.”
“Heath has done a phenomenal enough job that I would not be surprised (if he won).”
Maggie, whose brother Jake Gyllenhaal starred with Ledger in 2005’s Brokeback Mountain, tells MTV.com:
“He hit it in the entire performance (in Batman).
“It’s so difficult to do that in a huge movie like this and much easier to do in the tiny movies. That’s why those are always the people who win Academy Awards.
“Heath was (amazing); it’s so unusual, and it happens really rarely even for the best actors, that you just hit this stride in a role and you’re totally free. And when that happens, you can do no wrong. It’s incredible to be around, and that’s what it was like with him.”
And Oldman adds:
“I think it’s an incredible performance. I think it sets a new benchmark. It would surprise me if he didn’t get a posthumous Oscar for it.”
Only seven actors have received posthumous Oscar nominations, including Spencer Tracy for 1967’s Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner and James Dean, who was nominated twice after his death for 1955’s East Of Eden and 1956’s Giant.

“accidental overdose of perscription drugs” makes it sound like he wasn’t a drug addict. Recreational abuse of perscription drugs, is drug abuse and in many cases drug addiction, and has in recent years overtaken that of non-perscription drug abuse/addiction.

Let’s face it, THE DARK KNIGHT has got to be the biggest surprise of the year. Sure it was expected to be a hit but my GOD did anyone really think it would go on to topple STAR WARS? Of course not! Nobody saw that one coming. Hell, everyone thought IRON MAN would be the film to beat this summer! Then Batman comes along and knocks every film out of its way! What is the mystique of this recent phenomenon? Is it the death of Heath Ledger hanging over this movie like a big grey stormcloud? Is it the taut direction of Christopher Nolan? Is it the punchy script by The Nolan Brothers? Or is it the most brilliant performance by an actor(Heath Ledger)in a very long time? Is it all of the above? Would this movie have sucked without Heath Ledger in it? Does Heath really deserve an Oscar? Yes I think he does. Saw the movie twice and his Joker still stays with me just like when Anthony Hopkins chilled our dreams as Hanibal Lecter or when Robert DeNiro blazed the screen as a psycho in Cape Fear. Ledger stole the whole godamn movie! That’s why he deserves The Oscar For Best Oscar. Not because he died. Will The Dark Knight get Best Picture? I wish it would! I have seen some pretty crappy movies win the gold for Best Picture. And The Dark Knight is one of the better films to come out of Hollywood in a long time now. And Ledger just made it that much richer. That’s why he will join the echelons of James Dean and Marlon Brando. His Joker cements his place in film history…
