“Fresh Off the Boat” may lose an important fan, Eddie Huang

Eddie Huang wrote a book called "Fresh Off the Boat", which recounts his experiences as a boy growing up in Orlando, Florida. He is not happy with the show, which is based off of his book. He thinks it is sugarcoating his actual story. He's honest enough to keep it real.

M r Huang also thinks the show “Fresh Off the Boat”, which portrays a fictionalized version of his real family, does not portray Asian Americans authentically.  He says,

“I don’t think it is helping us to perpetuate an artificial representation of Asian American lives and we should address it.”

You can read the full story here.

I’ve never seen the show for more than 5 minutes and based on these 5 minutes I’m in no position to make any judgments about whether the show accurately represents Asian Americans or not.  But I can say that the show is not very funny.  It’s no where near as funny as ABC’s “Blackish”, which isn’t as good as, say, “Modern Family”. It makes me wonder why there hasn’t been a funny show with Asian Americans in it. Margaret Cho has good comedic chops.  Let her consult on the show.
