First Black Supermodel Naomi Sims Has Passed Away

The first black supermodel, Naomi Sims, passed away on Saturday of cancer in Newark at the age of 61.

Sims became the first black model to appear on Ladies Home Journal in 1968, a mainstream women’s magazine, and broke barriers while doing so.

It was ahuge achievement for the “Black is Beautiful” movement during that time and Sims went on to appear on the covers of Life, Cosmopolitan and Essence.

She is survived by her son Robert, daughter, Betty, and her granddaughter.
