Emma Thompson On Feminism, Donald Trump & Hollywood’s Ageism

Emma Thompson is keeping it real and telling it how it is.

E mma is pretty ballsy when it comes to speaking her mind, and it’s only a good thing because there is always a sad truth to everything she exposes and touches upon. In a new interview, she sheds some light on a few issues and the way she speaks about them is particularly illuminating coming from her own point of view.

Speaking on the hot topic of feminism, Emma says it’s something she has always felt strongly about throughout her life and she believes women need to change how they think:

“I’ve been a card-carrying, radical feminist since I was 19. Most women who I would want to listen to wouldn’t have any problem at all with the word feminist. It’s bizarre. Any woman who says they’re not a feminist is basically saying that they don’t believe in equal rights for women. Any woman who says, ‘I hate my bum, I hate my body,’ is essentially expressing a kind of misogyny. All women who come up with that need to think very carefully about what it is they’re saying. Including me!”

She also gets political in the interview, commenting that she thinks Donald Trump’s bid for presidency is a huge disaster:

“Let’s face it, the Republicans have chosen Donald Trump to run — can you take anything they say seriously, on any level? I suppose you can, in the sense that many of them have power, and that’s something you guys are really going to have to address, because it’s a disaster. I think it’s terrifying.”

Hollywood’s ageism is still going strong and leading ladies always have to be so much younger than their older male romantic interests. Emma says it continues to shock her:

“The age thing is insane. It was ever thus. I remember saying years and years ago, when I was 35, that they’d have to exhume somebody to play my leading man … Nothing’s changed in that regard. If anything, it’s got worse….I remember somebody saying to me that I was too old for Hugh Grant, who’s like a year younger than me, in Sense and Sensibility. I said, ‘Do you want to go take a flying leap?’”
