Amidst her support for Kesha and multiple social media speeches about women empowerment and taking a stand, Demi Lovato DID appear at the White House this week, but instead, she was in full celebration mode. President Obama, who called Ray Charles his absolute favorite musician, and the first lady Michelle Obama, hosted a taping of “Smithsonian Salutes Ray Charles: In Performance at the White House, where celebs like Demi along with Usher, The Band Perry and gospel singer Yolanda Adams, paid tribute to the late singer with a beautiful medley of his songs.
Each musician took turns singing many of Ray’s biggest hits, where Demi performed “You Don’t Know Me” after giving a heartfelt speech in remembrance of Ray. Take a look:
Demi also documented herself hanging out with Usher on Snapchat leading up to the performance, and YES, those insane Snapchat filters were most definitely used.
President Obama revealed that he and Michelle set aside nights like this to celebrate the music that has helped shape America. He added QUOTE, “Whatever genre of music he was playing, there was no mistaking his singular sound: that virtuoso piano playing that matched that one-of-a-kind voice. He couldn’t see us, but we couldn’t take our eyes off of him.”
But believe it or not there WAS some boo-ing involved. Obama revealed that this program is the final “In Performance” event of his administration when the audience jokingly booed in unison, as he will be leaving office in January after serving two terms. However, we will ALL get to tune into the hour-long program that is scheduled to be broadcast by PBS stations nationwide tomorrow, and I highly doubt we will hear any booing of the sort.
