Federal intern Chandra Levy disappeared in May 2001 at the age of 24.  She was last spotted wearing jogging clothes when she left her apartment.  Her remains were then found in Rock Creek Park in Washington about a year later.

California Democrat Gary Condit was romantically linked to Levy, but was not considered a suspect in her death or disappearance although it reportedly ended his Congressional career.

Now, 7 years later, Television stations, KFSN and KCRA in California and WRC in Washington, D.C. have reported police are close to an arrest in the case.

Chandra’s mother, Susan Levy, told KGO-TV in San Francisco:

“Your child is dead and gone and it’s painful, but we’re glad that the police and people are doing something, and investigating, and making a difference so somebody’s not on the street to do it again.”

Although her parents did not say when an arrest warrant may be issued.

Besides Condit, Ingmar Guandique, 27, a Salvadoran immigrant was also interviewed int he case, he has denied any involvement in Levy’s disappearance and killing.  Shortly after Levy’s disappearance, Guandique was convicted of attacking two women in Rock Creek Park.

On the ongoing case, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said in a statement Saturday:

“This case generated numerous bits of information, which we continue to follow up on.”
