Ben Stillers New Movie Tropic Thunder Looks Like It Will Be Funny As Hell

Can you guess the African American in the photograph above? It is none other than Robert Downey Jr. playing Kirk Lazarus, a very serious Oscar-winning actor cast in the most expensive Vietnam war epic ever filmed. The problem is “Kirk’s” character was originally written to be black. So he decided to dye his skin….
Now is this funny? Mean? Depends on who you ask. Now I’ll give you one guess on who could cowrite and direct a soon to be ‘comic masterpiece’. You guessed it, Ben Stiller who will also be starring with Jack Black and RDJr in the movie described as a modern day Apocalypse Now.
Paramount plans to debut the trailer online March 17. In one of Downey’s scenes, he tries to bond with a real African-American castmate by quoting the theme song from The Jeffersons. Downey is confident he never crossed the line. ”At the end of the day, it’s always about how well you commit to the character,” he says. ”I dove in with both feet. If I didn’t feel it was morally sound, or that it would be easily misinterpreted that I’m just C. Thomas Howell in Soul Man, I would’ve stayed home.”

I just love Ben Stiller. I have loved every movie he has ever been in. Zoolander and Night at the Museum are some of my favorites. He needs to do a Conan Spoof. Can’t you just imagine that?

You guys are missing the point. First of all, there WAS some ire over White Chicks in academia because that movie’s racist against blacks, not whites. Ever heard of neo-minstrelsy? If there’s a reaction to this movie, it will certainly be justified and have nothing to do with a “double standard.” That’s just some shit white people pull out so that they’re allowed to be racist.
The reason I feel it’s OK for actors like Dave Chappelle and yes, even the Wayans Bros (if they hadn’t done it so damned irresponsibly) to do “white face” has to do with my second point below.
Secondly, the reason to object to Robert Downey Jr. playing a black man is because our society has a long and recent past of exploiting black culture for laughs; distorting it to fit our preconceptions and then laughing at its expense.
When a black comedian does “white face,” it may hurt feelings, but it doesn’t hurt anyone socially. Whites are disproportionately in control of society and the media, so when we see “white face,” we can rest assured that the assumptions of “white face” won’t make their way into the popular consciousness. This is not true for black face. Black face is racist because it helps to oppress a minority, not because it hurts people’s feelings.

One of the other writers on Highbrid Nation wrote about Robert Downy playing a black man. He worries that Al Sharpton might have something to say about it, lol. Honestly as a black person I think it’s kinda cool that movie make-up has gotten to the point where you can make someone look like another race and if the pics I’ve seen of Robert Downy in costume are accurate than they did a really good job! Plus Robert is a very capable actor so I’m sure he wont come across as stereo typical or offensive. I could be wrong though.
